First-Generation Scholars’ Scheme
“On Wednesday 30th January, a small group of Year 9 students got the opportunity to go to the University of Sussex to experience a day in the life of a student. At the start of the day, we met a few ambassadors who introduced themselves and explained what they are studying. They took us all to a small lecture in the main building and later, we went on to meet Chris Derbyshire (who was the School and Colleges Partnership Coordinator); Chris explained his role and told us what a university is looking for and what kind of experience you can get through different courses. The group of Year 9’s then had a campus trail which included the library and the chemist/doctors; it was great because they gave us interesting facts as we went along. After the tour, we went to the student accommodation and were shown around a room, we found out how they live and how many people you share a living area with, which is between 4-12 people.
We had lunch in a café where they gave us a token to spend on a variety of food and drinks; the most popular food was Krispy Kreme donuts. After that, we had a lesson on budgeting and how much everything costs at the University of Sussex; everyone found the budgeting lesson really fun as it was interactive and we realised how different the learning is in university compared to secondary school.
The day was a very good experience for the group and everyone enjoyed it. It made us really think about life after school”
