Year 10 Science Experiments

10xy1 have been genetically modifying bacteria to make them glow in the dark! The pupils had to cut a gene from a jelly fish and place it into the plasmid of a bacterial cell. The bacteria then divided rapidly and passed on the gene for glowing to its offspring. This is an incredibly challenging practical as the pupils had to ensure they were not contaminating their plates and had to do certain steps for a specific amount of time. All the groups managed to produce some genetically modified, glow in the dark bacteria. Here are a couple of photos to show what they looked like.
