Year 7 Talk from Local Second World War Veteran
On Tuesday, Mr Tillard of North Chailey visited the school to talk with a group of Year 7 students about his experiences of action in the Second World War. It is believed that he is the only resident of Chailey left who was a combatant in that conflict, and the visit was arranged to coincide with the month that saw the 100th anniversary of the end of that other huge global conflict of the 20th century, the 1914-18 War. Mr Tillard talked to the students about the nature of the 1939-45 war, and described his close-to-death experience as the leader of a scout platoon in the breakout from the Rhine bridgehead towards the end of the war. We thank Mr Tillard for his time and for sharing his thoughts and memories with us.
