Parliamentary democracy assembly yr 9

We were lucky enough to have Dionne Flatman & Sarah Kruschandl from Burgess Hill Girls visit Chailey School on Wednesday morning.  Dionne is Head of Economics, Politics & Business and Sarah is Head of Partnerships & English & a Sixth Form tutor.

Dionne and Sarah were here to deliver an assembly to our Year 9's on UK Parliament and democracy.   Dionne is a gold accredited UK Parliament Ambassador and has the responsibility to deliver workshops and assemblies to schools all over Sussex.

With the upcoming general election in mind, we felt it was a great opportunity for our students to learn more about how parliament works, what happens in parliament, who makes the laws and what happens in a general election.

The session was interactive from the start, with the students being shown a video that detailed what parliament is, how it works and the importance of voting. Though the legal age to vote is 18, you can register to vote from 16 years old! This was news to many of the group and we hope that they understand the importance of voting and having a voice.

During the assembly many of our Year 9's volunteered to take part, as you can see from the photos below we have a lot of great sports in Year 9 who were happy to step up and get involved.  Well done Year 9! Reward points have been awarded.

The video that the students watched is in the link below or you can watch it HERE - it's a short film suitable for all year groups.  We would encourage all students to watch this video, and will post a link for it on the Careers & Work-Related Learning padlet too.
