Dyslexia active status 2024

Chailey School has recently achieved the prestigious Dyslexia-Active certification from the East Sussex Local Authority Communication, Language, Autism Support Service (CLASS). This updated certification replaces our previous Dyslexia Friendly status, following the publication of the East Sussex Literacy Difficulties and Dyslexia Policy and Guidance for Schools, which sets out new, revised guidelines for supporting students with literacy difficulties, including dyslexia.

According to the updated policy, East Sussex is committed to promoting high standards of literacy for all children and young people (CYP). The policy acknowledges that some CYP face greater challenges in learning to read, spell, and write, despite high-quality teaching. It acknowledges that these difficulties can cause anxiety for both students and their families. The aim is to address the needs of all students with literacy difficulties, regardless of whether they have a formal dyslexia diagnosis. Schools are encouraged to adopt a Dyslexia Active approach, which offers a flexible, graduated method of identifying, supporting, and intervening for pupils with literacy needs.

This new Dyslexia-Active certification represents a more dynamic, ongoing process compared to our former Dyslexia Friendly status. It emphasises the continual development of a neuro-affirmative environment, one where support for students with literacy challenges is constantly evolving. Chailey School's achievement of this certification is a testament to our commitment to providing the best possible support for children and young people with literacy difficulties. It is recognition that, at Chailey, we always strive to offer high-quality, inclusive teaching and learning experiences, to ensure that every student feels valued and can thrive both socially and academically.
